AN EXAMINATION ON NON-CONSENTIUAL EXPOSURE TO ADVERTISMENTS

‍ ‍

Advertisers have quietly crept their way into our third places, our places of temporary quiet contemplation. Sitting on the bus, or train, sitting on a bench on a busy street, merely existing inside of a city. Airports, sub ways, grocery stores, walking down the street, on your TV, free or cheap media subscriptions. Everywhere you turn there they are, trying to get you to buy what they are selling. No one asks if you want to see that, are you in the mood for “in the mood” products and services. The drunk desperately trying to cling to sobriety just to have beer and liquor advertisements everywhere they look. A you woman grieving a miscarriage having to flip past pages of diaper and formula adds. The psychic damage of this non consensual exposure to anything or any one that can pay the demanded price of the realm is not untold, it is truly unknown. A question that has not been asked. The mere act of existing is not consent. Much like credit scores, no one asked for, or signed up for this. With that in mind, I have decided to non consensually share my art with anyone who happens to have the bad luck of coming across it. No permission is sought, or accepted. I will produce, and install my art as I deem appropriate. No committees, no Q review, no risk assessment. Just vibes and good faith attempts to increase the amount of whimsy someone may come across by happenstance. If you find my work in public, feel free to leave it where you found to perhaps bring a small smile to another, or, if it strikes you, take it home. Hang it up on a wall, put it on the shelf, or table. Have a laugh when someone asks you why you have a photo of a toilet hanging up. The price of my work in the wild is free. The  process of interacting with it, is the cost of admission. Nothing else is sought or expected. That being said, if you are in the market for purchasing contemporary art, and you enjoy my work; I use a progressive fee structure. I saw a quote one time that stuck with me, not sure who said it. Something along the lines of: from those according to their abilities, and to those according to their needs. My pricing structure  goes from free to “probably tax fraud or money laundering”. . . Allegedly. . . in a video game. . . as a joke. . .
